If you’ve ever wondered how to trust God when anxiety won’t go away, you’re not alone. Many Christians struggle with worry, fear, and anxious thoughts while simultaneously believing God’s promises. This often creates a frustrating cycle: “If I truly trusted God, wouldn’t I feel less anxious?”
As a Christian counselor, i’ve found that many people mistakenly equate fear with a feeling and negate their power of choice. The truth is you can experience physical feelings of fear and anxiousness and still choose faith.
You can feel afraid and still move forward. You can experience uncertainty and still trust God. You can have anxious thoughts and still live from a place of confidence in God’s character.
One verse I return to often in 2 Timothy 1:7:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
This verse doesn’t promise that we will never experience anxiety. Instead, it reminds us that fear does not have authority over us. The goal is not to deny the physiological response we experiencing, but to not allow feelings to become our master. Fear my still knock at the door, but it doesn’t have to decide how we live.
Choosing faith isn’t merely a feeling. It is a behavior. It is waking up and taking the next small step. It is showing up for the responsibilities God has given us, despite what we feel. It is investing in relationships, pursuing purpose, and noticing beauty. It is continuing to live while trusting God with what we cannot control.
So perhaps the question we need to ask ourselves is not, “Do I still feel anxious?” Perhaps the better question is,”If I truly believed God’s promises today, how would my life be different?” And then, one small decision at a time, begin living as though those promises are true.
